Athina Lisgara MEng
Science Communication Team
I am an Environmental Engineer and currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health (USA). Growing up in a small city in Greece with high industrial pollution, I developed a deep concern for the well-being of both humans and the environment, as well as an interest in understanding the mechanisms through which environmental factors can influence disease development. This motivated me to take my first steps into the field of environmental health sciences, beginning with my degree in Environmental Engineering and specializing in Environmental Toxicology.
My current research focuses on the role of environmental exposures in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, combining advanced analytical chemistry and molecular biology approaches.
As a member of Greek Women in STEM, I am part of the Science Communication team, leading the magazine and contributing to the podcast section. Through my work in GWiS, I aim to inspire and empower young women to pursue careers in STEM by sharing experiences and insights from diverse scientific fields.
Outside of work, I enjoy rhythmic gymnastics, yoga, and pilates, as well as reading and traveling, which keep me energized and inspired by new perspectives and cultures.
