Athina Metaxa M.Sc.

I work as a Life Sciences Consultant in London and a part-time Postgraduate Researcher at the University of Oxford. In 2024, I graduated with an MSc in Evidence-based Healthcare from Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, focusing on assessing the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions for mental health disorders using evidence synthesis methodologies. My dissertation on the effectiveness of psilocybin as an antidepressant was published on the British Medical Journal (BMJ), and as a result, I had the opportunity to talk about my research on BBC News and participate in seminars organized by European College of Neuropsychiatry, providing an opportunity for me to reach clinicians, patients, academic researchers, and  a wider audience of people interested in scientific communication.

Throughout my time at university, I felt like I would benefit from having access to network of peers, especially other women, with whom I could exchange advice, seek help, and create a feeling of community like that GWIS can provide. Unfortunately, many of us have had to navigate important decisions, like whether to pursue further studies or start working in industry, and committing to a specific career path, without proper guidance and mentorship. Having been through this process myself, I would love the opportunity to support GWIS in its mission to help Greek women interested in STEM (whether in academia, industry, or both!), and promote science communication to a wider audience.

I am looking forward to getting actively involved in science communication as part of the GWIS team, including writing articles on recent breakthroughs in neuropsychological research, helping conduct interviews and record podcast episodes, and connecting with early career researchers looking for mentorship and advice.
